    Description

14K Gold Enamel HAWAII Crest Pin CULMAN Honolulu 1907 -17 COAT ARMS Watch Brooch
FINE WORKMANSHIP in 14 Karat Gold and Enamel.  Royal Coat of Arms by an IMPORTANT
    HAWAIIAN
MAKER in Honolulu in the Early 1900s.  In business only about 10 years, making their pieces hard to find!
Rendering the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 14 karat yellow gold and five colors of enamel, this signed vintage watch pin, lapel pin or brooch is highly detailed and quite regal.  In the center is a crest with a crown on top and in the middle of the crest is a shield shape in green enamel, representing the ancient flag of the Hawaiian chiefs.  In two corners there is yellow enamel centered with the tabu ball and stick, signifying the power and authority of the King.  In the other two corners are alternating stripes of red, white and blue enamel, for the eight islands of Hawaii.  Flanking the crest are two hooded warriors, one holding a spear and the other, a staff.  All of this is set in white enamel studded with 34 crosses and at the bottom is a starburst design, symbolizing the medal badge of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.  Framing the sides and top are the undulating folds of what looks like a drawn curtain with tassels, but represents the royal mantle or cloak of authority, which is in turn surmounted by another crown.  As you can see, there is a lot going on in this pin!
Measuring 7/8" wide by just under 1" tall, it has the old style simple "c" clasp.  It also has a hook on the back for hanging a watch or other article.  It weighs 4.7 grams.
It is signed "14K Made in -H C- Honolulu" on the back.  (Last photo.)  H C is one of the signatures of H. Culman, who was a Hawaiian jewelry artist in business in Honolulu on O'ahu for only about 10 years, from 1907 to 1917.  With so few years in operation, this native Hawaiian company's jewelry is highly sought but there just aren't enough pieces to go around.
The brooch is in Very Good vintage condition with expected surface dirt, scratches and perhaps slight tarnish.  It has a lovely vintage patina, with the brightly gleaming 14 karat gold; cleaning and polishing are left to the buyer's discretion.  There are also the usual minor manufacturing imperfections in the enamel: minuscule dark spots, shallow pitting and a couple tiny places where one color "bled" into another (for example in the second stripe from the top on the right, where the blue color "bled" into the white), all visible
    only
upon close inspection and magnification and mentioned only for completeness.
Expertly crafted over 100 years ago by a highly respected and sought after
    Hawaiian
maker, this Magnificent 14 Karat Gold and Enamel Coat of Arms watch pin or brooch is of the highest quality.  An outstanding example of the work of H. Culman, it is a wearable piece of art and history that can only increase in value while you enjoy owning it.  You do not have many opportunities to buy these, not even on eBay, because they are rare and also because they are regarded so highly by their owners, they are passed down with pride from generation to generation.  This brooch has an aura of Majesty and History about it and in 14 karat gold, it will make a treasured Heirloom, taking pride of place in your collection of Hawaiiana or vintage jewelry.
