    Description

This is a remarkable 1897 promotional or advertising soft cover book issued by the Philadelphia Reading and New England Railroad. Full title is SUMMER HOMES in the Southern Berkshire and Litchfield Hills. The content includes quite a bit on the railroad's landmark - and still standing Poughkeepsie Bridge in New York State, a small fold out route map as shown, and information on the towns served by the railroad - including their merit as summer retreats for the wealthy. 192 pages! This is profusely illustrated, most two page spreads include one full page illustration as shown. On page 172 some advertising starts for connecting transportation or services. These include pages for the Hudson River Day Lines, Saugerties Evening Line Steamboat Co, Ontario & Western Coal, Travelers Insurance, Barnum Richardson & Co - Salisbury Charcoal & Pig Iron - Lyme Rock Connecticut and the Baldwin Locomotive Works.   See pics for dimensions and condition. The soft cover book has wear at the spine top and bottom as plainly seen. Otherwise complete.
