Description
Autograph note signed (ANS) ofFanny Davenport
, (1850-1898), American Stage actress, the daughter of American actor Edward Loomis Davenport (1816-1877) and English actress Fanny Vining, she was born in London, but brought to the U.S. at age 4 and educated in Boston schools. She made her stage debut in 1862 at Niblo's Garden in New York; From 1869 to 1877, she performed in Augustin Daly's Company, and afterwards with a Company of her own. She died at age 48.
The note is 1 pg., approx. 6" x 9-1/2", on stationery of the Hotel Normandie, (located on Broadway & 38th), with printed "189-" date, which dates this letter to the 1890's, requesting theatre seats or a box for her and 2 friends, and reads:
"Tuesday.
May I be favored with seats or a Box for tonight myself and friends (3 in all).
Yours very truly,
Fanny Davenport"
At bottom, the theatre manager has written:
"OK. Box - Lower. Box O.
A.H. Canby"
Accompanied by an original Cabinet Card photo of Fanny Davenport by Sarony, with pen notation "in 'Pique' 1875" -
"Pique" was an 1875 play produced by Augustin Daly which had a very successful run of 237 consecutive performances in New York at the Fifth Avenue Theatre. Fanny Davenport played Mabel Renfrew, considered one of her most masterful character creations.
Condition: The letter has normal folds, and some wrinkling and small creases. Small repair to bottom left corner. Two old mounting stains on the back.
The photo has been trimmed at the sides of the mount, but not affecting the photo, and there are old tape stains at the corners from prior mounting.
