    Description

This is an antique vest, or also known in the Macedonian folklore piece of an ethnic costume called Klasenik. it is part of the ethnic costumes from the region Gorni Bitolski sela, near the city of Bitola. It was made in the second half of the XIX century. It has a few damages visible on the photos, few stains from its age, and a few rips and small holes made by moths, repaired.
However is a very rare and unique piece of an ethnic costume from this region. Probably only a few are kept. There is also a story about this kind of vest that soldiers from Germany in the Second World War they were collecting them, because of the signs at the back side on the bottom, reminding them on their sign in that period, the Nazi cross.
At these vests those symbols were embroidered as a reminder of the religion that the people have in this region, symbols of Christianity even they were living in mostly Islamic Empire in that time ( in the second half of XIX century, Macedonia was still under the Ottoman Empire).
