PREFACE
THIS little work, originally prepared for serial publication in the RAILWAY WORLD, was intended to present the principal facts which establish the position of railway transportation in the present organization of industry in the United States, with only so much of comment and discussion as seemed absolutely necessary in order to define the relations among those facts. The present publication is due to the belief that while more extended treatment of some of the subjects than is here given is unquestionably desirable, a concise and untechnical statement may, in view of the necessities of the present situation, prove more generally serviceable than a larger and more ambitious work.
H. T. N. U. S. Department of Agriculture. WASHINGTON, October, 1898.
